City hubs, precinct notes and how-to guides — not a directory and not a ranking.

This page is a method for the grid: speed at lunch, steam at night, and whether a room can hear a curtain time. It is not a scorecard. We do not name rooms.

Read the CBD hub first. Chinatown sits inside this map. It is not the whole map. A 12:10pm roast-meat plate and a 9pm noodle are different jobs in the same postcode.

Decide before you leave the platform

Most CBD Chinese meals start from a station or a hotel. Ten minutes on foot will take you through Chinatown and out the other side. Decide whether you want a lantern street or a quieter grid room. Walking without a decision is how you end up in the first empty tourist menu.

Theatre and concert nights compress the east of the grid. Say your curtain time. A kitchen that cannot hear that sentence is the wrong kitchen for the evening. A room that can send a green and a rice before 6:40 is doing a different craft from a banquet hall in the east.

The weekday CBD is an office machine. The weekend CBD is tourists, sport and people who came in for Chinatown. Menus do not always change; pacing does. A Saturday lunch can feel like a suburban Sunday. A Tuesday 12:10pm will not.

Downstairs rooms and extract fans

A lot of CBD Chinese dining is a level below the street. That can mean better extraction and a serious wok line. It can also mean you cannot judge the room until you are on the stairs. Send one person down. Look at the tables. Then commit.

The grid is full of extract fans that are not on Little Bourke. A good lunch can sit on a street you came to for something else. Look up. Smell the street. Then decide. Density is the advantage. It is also how people walk past a serious roast-meat window to sit under an English sandwich-board.

The same plates, faster

Ask for a green. At lunch it should still have snap. If it has been holding since the first office sitting, you will know. Fried rice should not be a yellow slab. Steamed fish at night should still smell of the sea, not of a box.

A mixed menu is common for a passing crowd. Hear the promise. A short roast list is a different one. Use the regional essay. Australian-Chinese lunch rooms are not lesser. Judge speed, oil and whether they can turn the plate before you have to be back at a desk.

Questions that save a grid table

  • Which region are you cooking from tonight — or at lunch?
  • Can this avoid oyster sauce, lard or stock?
  • We have a curtain at 7:30. What can you actually get out?
  • Is the fish whole, and is it by weight?
  • Can we sit where we can still hear each other at 12:15?

A vague allergen answer is information. A floor that talks in minutes rather than courses is the right floor for this postcode.

What this page will not do

We will not invent a best-in-the-CBD list. We will not quote a price. For Little Bourke as a street, use the Chinatown guide. For the wider city, use the Melbourne reviews method. For a celebration, leave the two-top fantasy behind and use the banquet guide.

For cooking after the tram, use the CBD recipe note. Then walk. The grid is the point.

Roast windows, sandwich-boards, and the ten-minute walk

A hanging roast display is information: the kitchen is doing that work today. An English sandwich-board on a corner is also information: the room is fishing a passing crowd. You can eat well in either. You should not confuse them.

Ten minutes from a station is enough to pass three rooms. Decide the job on the platform. If you are pre-theatre, the first convincing roast window may be the right call. If you have ninety minutes and no curtain, you can walk through Chinatown and out the other side before you sit.

A downstairs room that is full of office tables at 12:10 and empty at 3 is doing its job. Do not mark it dead. Come back at the hour that matches the work. A 9pm noodle in the same postcode is a different doorway and a different test. Carry the curtain time or the desk time in your mouth when you ask the floor what they can actually send. The CBD hub is the map for that choice. This page is only the questions. If the floor answers in minutes, believe them. If they answer in courses, you are in the wrong hour for the grid.

Do you still publish Melbourne CBD restaurant reviews?

No. This page is a method for judging a room. Use the tests below. We do not publish scores.
